TWO DIFFERENT DAYS OF INDEPENDENCE: PAKISTAN AND INDIA

In advancing teenage, our generation which could read English well and was brought up on Coleridge, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats and Byron, have stored in our minds with the memories of the communal orgies of 1946-47, the dawn of independence on the night of 14/15 August 1947. Where his bahu is concerned, her community, the Bunts, worship Bhootnath - Shiva as lord of the netherworld - and do all that goes with such worship.

.....Amitabh's father's autobiography for Penguin Books (English translation). It states that Harvanshrai's grandfather was so poor that he went to a saint of the Ramanand sect in Allahabad for blessings. The saint gave him three vessels and said that so long as his descendents had these, they would never lack. The turn in fortune began after that. I assume this branch of the family still has one of the vessels. Incidentally, I have it from someone who knows the Gandhis well that the split with the Bachchans was because ......
